Thread Transmissions
2022One of the things that grips me the most when I travel is how are we connected as a collective. Traveling to Peru means all roads to Machu Picchu, but my curiosity pulled me towards an unexpected turn— a fascination with textiles. I had no itinerary, no expectations— but my adventure started with a single thread, weaved from village to village, enchanted by the colors of their stories.
From the clothes we wear to the fabrics we fill our homes, textiles connect us in ways we often overlook. An approach to truly immerse into the Peruvian culture is understanding their relationships with threads and how it intertwine with people, emotions, and experiences. In the highlands of the Andes, weavers transform humble strands into elaborate tapestries where raw materials are transmuted into living, breathing symbols— as if an alchemy…
An adventure that took me from the Pachamama embroideries of the floating homes of Uros, to the island of Taquile where fabrics are used to identify marital status, to the golden threads of Chahuaytire, Thread Transmissions is a visual narrative that explores the rich and vivid textile communities in the Peruvian Andes. The series aims to recapture the textile industry in a new light, share fascinating stories about its textile culture, and empower Andean weavers to feel proud of their heritage, traditions, and most importantly, themselves.
